Our Mission
The mission of HYRF is to provide financial and technical assistance to orphanages in Haiti that seek to house their children to adulthood and provide them with the educational and other life skills necessary to lead independent and successful lives. HYRF believes that successful orphanages will work towards self sustainability through generating local community support. They will provide an environment incorporating physical security, nutrition, faith based spiritual nurturing, educational fundamentals including science and math, informational technology proficiency, creativity through the arts and athletics. HYRF will work with existing school based orphanages by assisting in new building and reconstruction projects that benefit the health, safety, care and education of orphaned children.
The Need
On January 12, 2010, a 7.0 earthquake devastated the small Caribbean island country of Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western Hemisphere. After the quake and its many aftershocks, approximately a third of the population was in acute need of emergency aid. Because Haiti lacks basic building standards, many island structures, including schools and hospitals, collapsed. The world is responding to the Haitian crisis with immediate aid for food, shelter and medicine.
The country is in need of significant relief efforts that go far beyond immediate aid. Eighty percent of the population lives under the poverty line and most Haitians live on less than $2 a day. Many organizations are responding to the crisis with immediate aid to help displaced Haitians and rebuilding so life can resume. This does not, however, resolve some of the systemic problems of Haiti, keeping it at the bottom of the economic ladder. Infrastructure rebuilding is now the highest priority in the county. The future of Haiti lies with its youth: through better education and the opportunities it will bring. With 38% of the population under the age of 15, and a literacy rate of 45%, there is much to be done. Click here to view information about Haiti Demographics.
